The Last Train Delivers a Halloween Scare

Halloween is upon us, and to help put fear into your soul, I present The Last Train, a CG short directed by the Irish team at Giant Creative. The film is the product of The Animation Hub, “a collaboration between staff and students of the Irish School of Animation (ISA) at Ballyfermot College of Further Education (BCFE).” While the score was dramatic, and fitting, I think this film would be more powerful if it were also filled with sound effects. There’s so much going on, it would have added to the intensity and fright.

Sherwood Plants The Apple Tree

Here’s an intriguing trailer – it’s for Alex Sherwood’s graduation film from the Irish School of Animation. His short is titled The Apple Tree. It’s NSFW, but in what appears to be a very innocent way. We’ll keep you updated when the full film is available for viewing.

O’Connell Plots Course To 23 Degrees 5 Minutes

Brown Bag Films’ Darragh O’Connell, fresh off an Oscar nomination for Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty, is ready to offer up a peek at his latest work. It’s titled 23 Degrees 5 Minutes, and we’re invited to the frigid Arctic, where an explorer reflects on a pursuit for the unified theory. The cast includes John Hurt, and the full film will come out this summer. Here’s a trailer:

The Secret of Kells Now Illuminated on DVD

The Secret of Kells, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2010 Academy Awards, is now available on DVD here in the US. Tomm Moore and crafty crew at Cartoon Saloon in Ireland created a critically-acclaimed film that also brought new attention to the realm of traditional 2D animation. Here’s a clip:

Brown Bag Films’ 6-minute short film Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty is now available online. The film, which was recently short-listed for the 2010 Oscar for Best Animated Short Film, was written and voiced by Kathleen O’Rourke and directed by Nicky Phelan.
