Laika’s follow-up to Coraline is a stop-motion comedy/thriller titled ParaNorman, due out in August of 2012. Here’s the first trailer, in which we meet Norman, the only kid in town who can communicate with the zombies overrunning the city.
Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Where the Wild Things Are) directed this new stop-motion short titled Mourir Auprès de Toi (To Die By Your Side). Jonze co-directed with Simon Cahn, and over 3,000 pieces of felt were used to bring classic books like Catcher in the Rye to life. You can watch the full film over at nowness.com, and here’s a behind the scenes assembly:
The UK’s Michael Please (The Eaglman Stag) was commissioned to create a short celebrating the release of Dragonframe 3.0, a software used at stop-motion shops like Laika and Buddy System Studios. It’s titled Seven Legs:
A few years back, Sarah Wickens, while studying at The Royal College of Art in the UK, created this unique, stop-motion piece titled What Light.
Roger D. Evans, who runs fansite jonnyquest.tv, recently released a lovingly-created, shot-for-shot remake of the Jonny Quest title sequence, produced in stop-motion.
The upcoming live-action feature A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas includes some slick-looking stop-motion animation, which was produced by Laika. My guess is that Bent Image Lab handled this, and I’ll confirm as we get closer. In the clip below, they call themselves “claymated,” while I’m guessing no clay was used, but I could be wrong. It’s supposed to look like Rankin/Bass style animation. [spoiler alert] I read that in the full film we see “Harold and Kumar tripping off of psychotropic eggnog, being chased by an evil snowman down the streets of Manhattan.” The film is due in theaters on November 4th of this year.
The animated segment starts 1:15 into the trailer, and I’ve taken the liberty of jumping forward to that point. To see the full trailer, click here:
Second Hand is Isaac King’s latest animated short. He combines stop-motion elements with 2D animation to create something quite unusual. King currently resides in Toronto.
