Five New Gobelins Films For Annecy Fest

Five brilliant new short-shorts by students at Gobelins were released last week. They were produced for the 2011 Annecy Festival, which has just wrapped up in France, and these gorgeous, musically-driven 1-minute pieces were directed by 5-member teams:

The 2011 Annecy Festival is a couple months away (June 6th – 11th), but today we get to watch the teaser, wihch was created by the Paris-based studio La Station Animation.

Animation On The Menu at the Tribeca Film Festival

For the 10th Tribeca Film Festival, which begins on April 20th, the programing team is including an animation collection. The assembly of films is being presented under the title All You Can Eat, and it includes Dancing Squirrel’s film A Lost and Found Box of Human Sensation. Here’s the trailer, in which you’ll hear the familiar voice of Ian McKellen (Gandalf) as the narrator.

Baker Returns With Tropfest Trailer

Baier Hits the Right Notes For Trickfilm Trailer

This clever, traditionally-animated trailer for the upcoming 2011 Internationales Trickfilm Festival (Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film) was directed by Viola Baier. She is a student at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, but Baier has also studied at Gobelins in France (and it shows). The festival runs from May 3rd to the 8th.

River to River Indian Film Festival Ident

Here’s a snappy ident for the 10th River to River Indian Film Festival, which is held each year in Florence, Italy. The piece was directed by Suresh Eriyat and produced out of Mumbai-based Studio Eeksaurus.

Mousquet and Cauwe’s Animated Wrestling Short

Pierre Mousquet and Jérôme Cauwe’s animated tale of two wrestlers won the CANAL+ creative aid Award at the 2010 Annecy Festival. Je Te Pardonne (I Forgive You) is the result of their studies at La Cambre in Brussels.

Lachauer’s 2009 Trailer for Trickfilmfestival

Cartoon Scum was a trailer for the 2009 Trickfilmfestival in Stuttgart, and it’s just now been released on the web. The CG short was directed by Jan Lachauer, and the team utilized beautiful, painterly texture mapping to give the film a unique look. You’ll see iconic animation character like Popeye, Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh all popping up. It was produced at the Filmakademie. Louis Tardivier, a former Gobelins student, handled he textures and color design.

Max & Ru’s Something Left, Something Taken

Fellow NYer’s, Max Porter and Ru Kuwahata, a dynamic duo of the NY animation scene, have shared with us and the rest of the online world their latest short, Something Left, Something Taken, a dark comedy inspired by a trip to San Franciso, which was in production for about 2 years and 3 months, in between commissioned work and done at night and on weekends.

I had the pleasure of seeing it several times already, and I can’t say enough good things about it. The style is fresh, the animation is amazing and full of clever subtleties. But I think what gets me excited the most is getting to see all the making of material on their blog. They’re certainly not shy with their creative process and it’s shows just how much pride and enthusiasm they have for even for the tiniest details.

The film has already received a number of achievements, and I am sure will continue to do so in the coming months, so check their site for updates, as well as the full list of credits for the film. Also check out some of their other work, including Electric Car which recently took home a 3rd place award at the ASIFA East International Film Festival. Congrats Max and Ru!

Two More Annecy Signal Films – Junk Space and Red River Bay

The 2010 Annecy Festival has released two more signal films from the students at Gobelins. The first, Red River Bay, takes us to a beast-filled swamp, and the second, Junk Space, fuses baseball, junk and some metaphysical energy cloud thing. Not sure what it all means, but damn is it beautiful.
