Ponyo DVD Washes Ashore

posted by Aaron, 11.36 AM

With an impressive 92% at RottenTomatoes.com, Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo seemed like a sure bet for an Oscar nomination this year, especially with 5 slots available (typically there’s 3). But it wasn’t meant to be this year, and Mihazaki will have to settle for his Annie Award nomination. The lavish 2D feature is now available on DVD, complete with a Behind the Studio featurette and an animatic presentation of the film. Here’s a clip illustrating Miyazaki’s pathway to production:

Drawing Prince Naveen From Princess and the Frog

posted by Aaron, 10.14 AM

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 2D feature The Princess and the Frog was nominated earlier this month for the Best Animated Feature category, and I think it should get an award (along with Secret of Kells) for simply helping bring 2D back into the limelight. Here’s a little vignette about Drawing Prince Naveen to help tide you over until the DVD arrives on March 16th. It’s not really a tutorial on how to draw Prince Naveen, but more of an homage to Duck Amuck, where the animator and his pencil mess with Daffy.

The Simpsons 20th Season DVD Released Ahead of Schedule

posted by Aaron, 11.08 AM

On the heels of Sunday’s big 20th aniversary special of The Simpsons, 20th Century Fox has released The Simpsons: The Complete Twentieth Season DVD. What’s unique here is they skipped seasons 13-19 to get here. It’s an obvious play on the whole hubbub surround the event, but I suspect there will be some consumer confusion with the product though. The box says “20 Years” on it – some might think they’re getting all 20. A true 20-season DVD set would look more like a carry-on bag, but not all shoppers will grasp this concept.
