The Goode Family is Bombing

posted by Aaron

ABC’s new animated-series The Goode Family is tanking. Acoording to Wikipedia, the show, which has moved from Wednesdays to Fridays 8:30/7:30c, is posting below a 1 rating (it’s actually putting up a 0.5 rating). I find the show somewhat amusing, if a bit gimmicky. I think it’s far better than sitcoms like Two and Half Men, but apparently the audience doesn’t. What’s your take?

Here’s a clip from last Friday’s episode, Freeganomics.

Although I should feel like it’s a blow to all us animators whenever animation tanks on primetime, I can’t really say I would mind if this show wouldn’t just go away.

The premise is a turnoff for me; not everything has to be about politics or difficult social-economic themes, but if you want to go there, you can’t just prop up a bunch of strawman and think you’re edgy. I call it contrived.

Second, the design is just ugly as a monkey’s butt.

To make matters worse, these are conclusions that I came to without watching a whole episode. What kind of a dick would do such a thing? The prime time audience at large, apparently.

Perhaps Mike needs to get back to them Beavis and Butthead roots. Unlike the Goode family–where in interviews he pretty much states (between the lines) that he’s trying to make a show that the mainstream will like– with B&B he made a show with great characters that he liked. That was a show that was not meant for primetime, but in its own weird way really shook things up. I thought it was brilliant.

… i’ve heard similar comments from people who’ve watched the show. i hope ABC can retool it and keep it above water.

If that clip is any indication of what the rest of the show is like then no wonder it is bombing. Lame writing, lame character design, lame animation.
