German Student Sets Sail With Plywood Pirates

posted by Aaron

Most animated student films clock in around 3 minutes. Some are 1 minute, others are 7, but that’s about the average. By that measure, Stefan Schomerus’ graduation film is an epic. Sperrholzpiraten (Plywoodpirates) is a 16-minute, stop-motion story about three young friends who are members of a club – the Plywood Pirates. They tackle imaginary foes, but near the end, we also watch them stare down a subject with real weight. The story has a few pacing issues, but it’s an incredible accomplishment for Stefan and the seizable team that helped pull the project together. Just imagining the work that went into the sets alone makes my head spin. The film was produced in conjunction with the Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Postproduction at the Filmakademie.
