Order Up a Plate of Chicken Cowboy

Animation world, meet Stephen Neary. It’s a name you’ll likely be hearing quite a bit more of, if you haven’t already. His 6-minute senior project at the the Tisch School of the Arts (the Kanbar Institute of Film & Television), titled Chicken Cowboy, is easily my favorite animated short of this new year, and I suspect few, if any, will exclipse it in 2009. It’s a simple enough set-up, a chicken cowboy who saunters into a new town, but the pacing, the voice acting, the fresh look, the odd choices (toaster and magnifying glass), the tense action and the overall feel of the film are all-around top notch. I have to agree with Michael Sporn who said the film “looked as though it were ready to go as the pilot for an excellent TV series.” Special mention is due to Robin Arnott, who handled the sound design, mixing and foley for the film. He added some crutial beats and set the tone for what will surely be Neary’s coming out party.
